This poster features a hurdy-gurdy made in 1931 by Claude Pimpard, known as “Pimpard Cousin Fils.” The instrument is among the last hurdy-gurdies to leave his workshop before his death later that same year.
Born into a distinguished family of instrument makers, Claude Pimpard (1863–1931) was the son of Gilbert Pimpard (1817–1905) and the great-grandson of Pajot, one of the prominent families that shaped the history of hurdy-gurdy making in Jenzat and the Bourbonnais region. This remarkable lineage is reflected in the instrument’s exceptional craftsmanship and elegant design.
The hurdy-gurdy, photographed by Pascal Cranga, is distinguished by its harmonious proportions, the beauty of its carefully selected timbers, and its characteristic carved female head. Its restrained decoration enhances the balance of its design and the refinement of its construction.
The instrument also has a well-documented history. It was commissioned directly from Claude Pimpard by Marie Sallet, a well-known figure from Pont-de-Vaux in the Ain department of France. This documented provenance gives the instrument a particularly human dimension, linking the maker’s craftsmanship to the musical and social life of its original owner.
Through this poster, visitors discover the transmission of a remarkable family tradition and a century-old craft that continues to inspire collectors and enthusiasts of the hurdy-gurdy and France’s musical heritage.
