A Hurdy-Gurdy by François Guiennet

This poster features a hurdy-gurdy attributed to François Guiennet, an instrument maker from Viriat, in the Ain department of France. Historical records mention several spellings of his surname, including “Guenet”, which appears in the 1836 census, where he is listed as a clockmaker at the age of twenty-eight.

The instrument, photographed by Pascal Cranga, is distinguished by the harmony of its lines and the understated elegance of its decoration. Its finely carved head, keyboard framed with contrasting inlays, and ribbed body combining light and dark woods demonstrate exceptional craftsmanship. The quality of the selected timbers and the balance of its proportions give this hurdy-gurdy a remarkable elegance.

The signature visible on the keyboard recalls the work of a maker who is now relatively little known. François Guiennet died in Bourg-en-Bresse at the age of fifty-three and belongs to the group of regional craftsmen who contributed to the history of the hurdy-gurdy during the nineteenth century. His work remains a valuable testament to the musical and artisanal heritage of the Bresse region.
