This poster features a hurdy-gurdy made by Claude Nigout (1837–1921), one of the most celebrated instrument makers of Jenzat, in the Allier department of France. Trained by Pajot, under whom he served as an apprentice, Nigout helped establish Jenzat as one of France’s foremost centres for the manufacture of hurdy-gurdies.
The instrument, photographed by Pascal Cranga, immediately captures the eye with the richness of its decoration. Its painted geometric motifs, finely inlaid keyboard, and beautifully carved female head reflect Nigout’s taste for elegant, meticulously ornamented instruments. The ribbed body, constructed with alternating light and dark woods—a hallmark of the finest Jenzat hurdy-gurdies—enhances the natural beauty of the selected timbers.
An inscription on the keyboard commemorates the recognition Nigout received at the Paris Exhibition of Industrial Arts, where his craftsmanship was officially honoured. The instrument was later played in Le Creusot during the early twentieth century, continuing its musical life long after it had left its maker’s workshop.
Through these photographs, this poster pays tribute to the work of Claude Nigout and to the excellence of the Jenzat school of instrument making, whose hurdy-gurdies are today among the most highly prized by collectors and enthusiasts of historic instruments.
